New Crane and Derrick regulations require certification of operators

New Crane and Derrick regulations require certification of operators

The new proposed OSHA regulations for Crane and Derricks (29CFR 1926.550) will be going into effect late summer/early fall 2010.  North Carolina Administrative Code 13 NCAC 07F.0913, passed in the fall of 2009, is already active and similar to the proposed OSHA rule.

There are three main components to the new Crane and Derrick regulations:

  • The ground must be secure and stable to support the equipment and load.
  • Hazards within the work zone must be reviewed.
  • Equipment must be inspected and operated by trained personnel.

These regulations require all construction crane operators to be certified and signalpersons to meet specified qualifications. The provisions will positively impact the safety of all crane operations.  As a result, many in the construction industry will want their Signalpersons/Basic Riggers qualified (certified) by a written performance exam/test through a nationally accredited exam program.

Columbus McKinnon is a member of the Rigging Certification Committee (RCC) for the Crane Institute of America Certification (CIC). CIC  has worked to develop a certification program to meet the requirements of the new OSHA regulations. Recently, the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) Board of Commissioners completed a review and approved the CIC application for accreditation.  Based on information available to date, CIC is the first to offer ACCREDITED CERTIFICATION for Riggers and Signalpersons.

  1. CMCO offers a wide variety of training services. Course descriptions are listed on our website at
We do provide rigging certification that meets OSHA guidelines. To be clear, OSHA does not provide or issue certifications themselves.

We can also provide EOT (electric overhead traveling) crane operator training. We do not offer mobile crane or derrick crane training.
Thank you for your inquiry and let us know if you need further assistance.

  2. Our company CosmoPetra is the official Distributers of Yale -Germany and we have been asked from several customers in the oil & gas industries to arrange training programes and certifications according to OSHA
